Castelfranco Veneto Guided Tour

Castelfranco Veneto is a prosperous town lying on the extreme western border of what was once the territory under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Treviso.

We will start our Castelfranco Veneto guided tour from its symbol, the castle. It was built in the 12th century by its first inhabitants, who could live there without paying taxes, hence the name “castle-franco”.

We will begin our walk by meeting at the Porta Franca, also known as the “main door”, as it looks out on the mother city, Treviso. The imposing and majestic Civic Tower (1) , almost like an open book, bears the signs of the history of Castelfranco Veneto and the dominations that have taken place.

We will continue our Castelfranco Veneto guided tour along the main road, discovering the Duomo (2), a precious treasure chest that houses the famous altarpiece by Giorgione and the Academic Theater (3), witness of the the intense and prolific work of the architect Francesco Maria Preti, who has shaped the new face of the city with his work.

Not far away, we will reach Giorgione’s birthplace and the square dedicated to him, Piazza Giorgione, today as in the past, home to the ancient Castelfranco market.

Finally, we will enjoy a beautiful view of the modern town,  which was born in the mid-16 th century, when Castelfranco Veneto, from a fortress, became an elegant town able to attract numerous noble and bourgeois families.

Along the 19th century streets we will  tell you the story of the most striking buildings and

find out some anecdote about the love affair between Giorgione and his beloved Cecilia.

(1) Admission by reservation, for a fee, from the end of March to the end of November.
(2) It is not allowed to enter the Church during services.. The Giorgione altarpiece is not open to visitors Sunday morning.
