Dante Alighieri Guided Tour in Treviso
In the fourteenth century Trevigi was a city in great ferment. Already in the previous century the municipal buildings had been built in brick and the tradition of frescoes was inaugurated.
The unique atmosphere of this city of water, beautiful and welcoming, had earned her the epithet of “Joyful and amorous March”.
During his exile Dante was a guest of the Guelph Gherardo da Camino, creator of the splendor of the city, known patron of important troubadour poets. No less famous was Gherardo’s daughter, Gaia, she was also mentioned in the Divine Comedy. At that time Trevigi could even boast a Pope, the Dominican Niccolò di Boccasio, Pope Benedict XI°, in whom the great poet had placed his hope to return to Florence.
Today in the city we have the Dante bridge with the memorial stone dedicated to him and his verse “where Sile and Cagnan join themselves” and the ark of his son Pietro kept in the church of San Francesco.
